Why do you think kids make fun of smarter kids then themselves?
It seems downright stupid for kids to make fun of smarter kids then themselves.
Shouldn’t all kids strive to be the best they can be?
Most bullying and picking on others stems from the bully being insecure. The lesser intelligence of the bully makes him think that by putting the other more intelligent kid down, that it somehow makes him seem superior, but in reality it does just the opposite.

Yes, but lots of times it’s hard to cover up their feelings of jealousy so they make fun of the smart kids to "bring them down to their level." Pitiful, really.

Kids resort to name-calling for the same reason adults resort to name- calling. They don’t have any relevant information to pull the person down. Yes, all kids should strive to be respectful to others. It will never happen with a competition-based schooling system(which isn’t saying anything bad about grading system; they are necessary as tools of reinforcement).

First of all, "then" should be changed to "than."
Second, you are using a huge generalization. I never got made fun of for being smarter. Another girl and I went to a different school once a week to do work that was very advanced for our age as part of the gifted program. We were never made fun of. To the contrary, the other kids asked us questions when didn’t understand something.
To this day, I can’t remember getting my feelings hurt because of my intelligence. My friends do tease me sometimes, but I know they don’t do it to upset me or hurt me.
I’ve only seen smart kids get made fun of on TV, to be honest.
